What Is TPS and CTPS? Telephone Preference Service Explained

The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is the UK's official "do not call" register for individuals. The Corporate TPS (CTPS) is the same for businesses. If you make sales or marketing calls, you need to screen your call lists against both.

What is the TPS?

The TPS is a free register where people record that they don't want unsolicited sales and marketing calls. Under PECR, it is unlawful to make a live marketing call to a number on the TPS unless that person has told you directly that they are happy to receive your calls.

What is the CTPS?

The Corporate Telephone Preference Service does the same job for companies and other organisations. Businesses can register their numbers to opt out of unsolicited sales calls.

How often should I screen?

New numbers are added to the registers every day. Screen your list before you start calling, and again if you are still calling it more than 28 days later.

What we do

Every DataMembership record is screened against TPS and CTPS before it is delivered, on every order and every membership, at no extra charge. Want only live, connecting numbers too? Add the optional HLR check.

Questions

Is TPS screening a legal requirement?

If you make live marketing calls, you must not call numbers registered on the TPS or CTPS unless the person has specifically agreed to calls from you — screening is how you make sure.

Does TPS apply to texts and emails?

No. TPS covers calls. Texts and emails are covered by consent rules under PECR.
